ATHENS, Greece (AP) – A fire broke out aboard a ferry as it sailed off the Italian coast today, forcing the evacuation of its 266 passengers to nearby ships. No one was injured by the fire aboard the Cypriot car ferry Saturnus.Three Greek car ferries picked up the passengers from lifeboats, the Merchant Marine Ministry said. The fire broke out in the engine room at 4:45 a.m. and was extinguished by the 50-member crew a short time later, according to the ministry and the shipping company, the Piraeus-based Ventouris Lines.
The ministry said the fire began as the ship sailed 24 miles north of the Italian town of Otranto. The ship had left the Italian city of Bari headed for the Ioanian island of Corfu and northern Greek city of Igoumenitsa.
The Saturnus was towed to Igoumenitsa after the fire destroyed its engines.

July 2003: Sold for scrap to Alang, India renamed GREENFIELD for a short time. When she was about to depart for her final voyage she was stopped due to unpaid debts and the Indian crew abandoned the ship.
2005: Sold to Tsirikos Lines, Freetown, Sierra Leone.
July 1st 2005: Arrived in Drapetsona for repairs.
