“In January 1984 work started on the construction of 4.13 hectare area of land for the much needed land for the assembly of freight vehicles at the Eastern Docks. Edmund Nuttall Ltd were awarded a contract worth £890,00 by Dover Harbour Board for the construction of a retaining wall to the 40,00 sq. metre reclamation at the Camber”.

“The contract was due to be completed by August 12th 1984, when the area between ‘The Pens’ and the existing Export Freight Compound was enclosed. Nuttall’s constructed a twin sheet piled, gravel filled wall between the old motor torpedo boats pens and the existing ‘suspended’ decking of the Export Freight Compound. As this area was protected water, floating plant was used to drive the double row of piles. A single line of Unissen piles tied into the decking were used at the northern end, whilst at the southern end the linkage was a mass concrete wall.”

“Once the area had been enclosed a contract for the provision of 750,000 cubic metres of sand from The Goodwins commenced on August 13th 1984 and it was estimated that it would be completed by September 30th. A third contract for the surfacing and services would then commence on October 1st 1984 and was due for final completion by March 31st 1985”.

“The Harbour Board were granted a licence by the Government to remove the sand from ‘The Goodwins’ and the cost of the reclamation was £6.4 million. Sand started to be pumped ashore into the new area of reclamation on August 1st 1984 and it was estimated it would take seven weeks to be spread over the 10 acre area. Once all the sand had been bulldozed on the site shale was spread over the area, followed by a lean mix of concrete before the concrete blocks were laid.”

Volvo Oord Dredging UK Ltd were the contractors for the dredging of the sand, but when their vessel VOLVOX DELTA was needed urgently in Germany, they brought in Ham Dredging who used their vessel HAM 309.
